Tarpon will be rolling and gulping air early. By mid-morning they will be running and daisy chaining below the surface.
05-02-17 Fishing Report
Conditions: The tides will be productive in the mornings and again in the afternoons this week but there will be very little water moving midday. Water clarity will remain excellent. Water temps will be in the high 70s to low 80s.
Bait the fish are feeding on: Shrimp, crabs, pinfish, glass minnows, whitebait (threadfin Herring and scaled sardines)
Target species right now: Tarpon, Redfish, Sea Trout, Snook
Fishing tactics: Fish the beaches and sounds this week. That's where you'll find the bait and better tides. With water temps near 80 the tarpon will be rolling and gulping air early. By midmorning they will be running and daisy chaining below the surface.
My fly fishing tip of the week: Tarpon time, upsize your leaders and pull test ALL your knots including your nail knot between your backing and fly line. I like to tie a bimini twist in the backing and then tie a double line nail knot around my fly line.
My spin fishing tip of the week: My tarpon spinning rigs are spooled with 50 pound braid. I tie 6' of 30 pound fluorocarbon shock leader to the braid using a double uni knot. A 75 pound barrel swivel works great for connecting the shock and bite leader. Pull test those knots!
7 day outlook: There's a chance of showers each day this week with light to moderate winds. There will be incoming tides providing only slight water flow in the backcountry. There will be more water moving in the sounds and along the beaches.
