Snook fishing in Matlacha as a winter cold front was settling in over southwest Florida. North wind blowing 10-15 with air temps in the 60s. Water temp 74*. The snook were cruising the sands along the mangroves just the same though. These weak cold fronts don't always shut the bite down. The ladyfish were eating anything thrown to them also.

Light winds and no rain! Perfect fishing weather. There are some jack crevalle and huge snook on the flats so up-size your leaders and bite tippets.
03-28-17 Fishing Report
Day one - 40* at the boat ramp 60* water and 20mph north winds. Day two - warmer and less wind. Not a stellar day but we got it done.
The Wilson family from Knoxville joined for a morning of fly fishing on Matlacha Pass. An approaching clod front pushed the snook and trout off the flats and into deep water. Solution - sinking lines and weighted flies.
Gordon and I pre-fished Bull and Turtle Bays a day prior to one of my March charters. The wind was 15 and gusty out of the NE. We found most of the fish holding in deeper water but once we found them the snook, sea trout, jacks and ladyfish were very willing to bite our lures. There's some pretty cool underwater video included in this one. Enjoy!
John Albin and Jim McCadie joined me for a few days of fly fishing. We fished Matlacha, Pine Island Sound and the Cape Haze Peninsula. Water temps and water clarity provided some excellent sight fishing opportunities.
Dry conditions continue. Water levels in the Harbor are low. Water Temps are in the mid-seventies. Water clarity is very good...
Tom and Joe caught four species of fish on their 4 hour charter in Bull Bay and Turtle Bay this week. We had to adjust our tactics, but it paid off...
Tim ans Lizzy catching several different species during their two day adventure on Boca Grande.
Jerry Jamison from Bath, Maine hooks and brings this nice tarpon boat-side using spin fishing gear and a live crab. Great Job Jerry!
The tarpon have returned to the beaches of Boca Grande, Captiva and Sanibel Islands after last week's back to back cold fonts pushed them offshore.
We saw this redfish rush the fly and eat in 12" of water. Paul caught it on a 9wt. Orvis Helios H2 rod and one of my whitebait flies.
Doug Bates from New Hampshire joined me for some snook sight casting in Bull and Turtle Bay in Charlotte Harbor. Water temps in the low 80's made the snook a bit sulky but we persevered. Caught em on Doug's 8wt TFO rod and one of his white and black deceivers.
Stephan caught mangrove snapper, snook, spotted sea trout, and jack crevalle while fly fishing in Matlacha Pass today. Great footage of a school of jacks busting bait against the mangroves. Also check out the run his 6 pound jack made at the end of the video. Stefan cranked the drag down three time and still went 75 yards into his backing before turning the fish. Love that 8wt. Hellios 2 rod paired with a Mirage reel.
Stefan Piccone fished Matlacha Pass with me today. He caught snook, mangrove snapper, sea trout and jack crevalle all on his 8wt Orvis Helios 2 fly rod. Great job Stefan!
Great light tackle and fly fishing for jack crevalle today with John Kern. We had schools of them busting bait in 2 feet of water along back country mangroves of Matlacha Pass. Sure did put John's new 8wt. fly rod to the test. John, we'll get you one of those big snook next time.
We caught ladyfish, spotted sea trout, mangrove snapper, jack crevalle and a puffer fish. The jacks were especially fun, they were busting bait against the mangroves in 2 feet of water!
When it too cloudy and breezy to sight fish and the snook are sulking you go catch seatrout and ladyfish. The Dobbs family from Ontario caught plenty of them on this trip to Matlacha Pass.
David Soule from Maine enjoying a morning of back country fishing in Charlotte Harbor's Matlacha Pass Wildlife Refuge. The first segment is catching ladyfish and the second is David's first redfish on a fly rod. He caught it blind casting an Orvis Helios 2 8wt into the mangroves with a hollow fly whitebait pattern I've been working on.
Keven Stevens and Jason Webber had a great day of back country fishing with me in Matlacha Pass Wildlife Refuge on the southern reaches of Charlotte Harbor. We were fishing with fly rods and light tackle spinning gear. Check out the nice redfish hooked in 14" of water on a MirroLure Twitchbait then watch a school of 10-12 pound jack cravale smashing bait in 2 feet of water on a grass flat. We also caught sea trout, ladyfish and snook. NICE!
Keven and Jason, it was great getting to know you, safe travels home and hope to fish with you again! Capt. Dave
