Light winds and no rain! Perfect fishing weather. There are some jack crevalle and huge snook on the flats so up-size your leaders and bite tippets.
03-28-17 Fishing Report
Conditions: I fished the East Wall, Matlacha Pass, Gasparilla Sound, Bull Bay and Turtle Bay last week. The water clarity was very good throughout the Harbor and it should be the same this week. There's a red tide bloom along the beaches from Boca Grande to Manasota Key but it hasn't entered the sounds or bays...
Water temps are now in the mid-low 70s. Salinity remains high due to the lack of rain. Fishing conditions are excellent.
Capt. Dave Pecci - Obsession Sportfishing
Conditions: August conditions, High surface temps are causing the striped bass to hold deep. Offshore, the water temps are finally where they should be.
Bait the fish are feeding on: Atlantic herring, sand eel, river herring, eel, pollock
Species to fish for this week: Striped bass, Bluefish, tuna and shark
Fishing Tactics: Fish the shallows during low light and then fish deep structure where the water is cooler mid day.
My fly fishing tip of the week: August is tuff fly fishing but if you go early and work structure near moving water you can prevail... Sinking lines are a must.
My spin fishing tip of the week: Use your fish finder to locate schools of striped bass in deep structure.
7 day outlook: IN shore: Hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Stripers are now into a night feed so fish early and late. Off shore: Tuna are still a no show but it could happen any day now that the cold water has retracted to the east. Shark fishing is heating up and should be very good.
LL Bean Hunt and Fish Dept. Senior Product Developer Jeff Miller and his 14 year old son Jason joined me for a fun filled Saturday morning fly fishing and light tackle spin fishing near Pine Island. We caught mangrove snapper, bar jack, bluefish, jack crevalle, seatrout and snook. Check out the porpoise attack in 18” of water when we released an eight pound jack!
Conditions: Warmer weather has allowed the water temps to rebound into the high 60s – low 70s. Low water levels exist especially during northerly winds. No red tide has been detected.
Bait: threadfin herring, pinfish, shrimp
Species to target this week: Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, Jacks, Ladyfish, Bluefish.
Fly Fishing Tactics: As the water temps get into the 70s the redfish and snook will move back into the shallows along the mangroves. Seatrout will be on the grass flats.
My Light Tackle Fishing Tip of the Week: Moving water is the key to finding snook and redfish. Deep holes at creek mouths will hold redfish. Mangrove points will hold snook.
7 Day Outlook: Morning fog early in the week. Some rain is predicted for Thursday and Friday. Light to moderate winds and temps in the mid 60s to mid 70s
June and July striped bass fishing on the Kennebec River With Obsession Sportfishing Charters.
Landing doubles using spinning rods in July on the Kennebec River. Just two of many fish caught on their trip with Capt. Dave Pecci - Obsession Sportfishing Charters.
Spring is coming. I'm guiding in Charlotte Harbor currently and making plans for the upcoming Maine guiding season. I'm looking forward to seeing you all in June! Capt. Dave Pecci
When the stripers go deep you need to do the same... The half and half is a deceiver tied with bumbell eyes and an inverted hook like a clouser. This one pictured is tied on a 2/0 hook with BIG bumbells and an epoxy head. Its not much fun to cast but it will get down to the fish. Usually fished on a 10wt rod and a 450 or 500 grain Depthcharge line.
Yep, its a go to fly for schoolies and bigger striped bass too. Usually in #2 or 1/0 but there are times #4s and even #6s work too. Perfect for hopping across the sand or mud flats on an outgoing tide...
The olive and white deciever - matches many of the baitfish striped bass chase. Tied on a 2/0 - 4/0 hook with a slight bit of weight added to get it down to where the stripers are. It's what's for diner... You can tell I'm a left handed tier from the pcture can't you.
One more full day of make ready and the Obsession will be launched for the 2013 season. New 150 four stroke Yamaha, new porta potti, key switch, new stern light... Safety gear - check, electronics - check, pumps - check, Through hull fittings - check. Striped bass, bluefish, sharks and tuna here we come!
