Cool stuff and ideas that anglers and boaters might find interesting.

Just in - Obsession Face Tubes

Just in from BlackStrap Products, custom Obsession Charters neck tube/face coverings! And for those of us who can't keep our glasses from fogging up, I've included a flexible nose clip  These tubes meet the Maine CDC's covid19 requirements for face covering while on a charter and have SPF 50 sun protection. I recommend using them folded double for extra covid19 protection.

$22 plus $6.00 shipping. If you want one (or more) email, text, or call me, I'll get them to you! dave@obsessioncharters.com 207-841-1444

Weathered Topsides and Decks – Problem Solved

For those of you who have an older boat (or an ancient one as I do) here's a product you might want to try – Woody Wax.

My 1993 Hewes Redfisher is showing her age, the hull has only a small amount of oxidation so a deep cleaning wax twice a year shines her up just fine. But the ol' girl's nonskid topside has become faded and porous to the point that it is hard to keep clean.

Cleanup after a day of guiding is now a breeze. Fish blood and bird poop washes away with a hose and a brush stroke.

Every Flats Skiff Needs a Power Poll - Right?

I'm sorry but it hard to justify the cost of a Micro Power Pole. They are half the price of those full size ones you see on bay boats but still they're $700 plus installation - Really?...

Problem #1- About 75% of the spots I like to stake up  here on Charlotte Harbor for sea trour, redfish and snook are hard packed limestone sand or oysters. You just can't poke a push pole into that stuff.
Problem #2 - An anchor really tears up grass flats and oysters beds.

This makes a power pole pretty appealing for sure but I'm cheap.

Here's my $90 alternative. A 7 foot Stick It stake out pin from Fishin Franks and two $3.00 nylon fairleads from the Marine Trading Post. Stick It makes a really nice mount for $150, but I like $6.00 much better and I finally have a use for the rear trolling motor mount that came with the skiff.

Yeh, I do have to take two steps across the aft casting deck to deploy the pin rather than pushing on a cool remote control. When not in use, it stows perfectly in the Redfisher's rod rack. Works just fine for me and there's $600 left in the checkbook.

Custom Rod Box Makes Florida Fishing Charter Logistics Much Easier

I retired the ol' Yukon Denali and have a nice (newer) GMC crew cab pickup. Problem - no secured rod storage with a 5'-6" bed... Enters my friend Fred Bogue, a beach and jetty angler who has struggled for years just such a problem. Fred sent me a link to Big Sky Rod Box in MT. Great product and really nice folks but, it only holds up to 6 fly rods... Next I contacted my buddy and sales rep at Hammond Lumber; Matt Stelzer for a bit of brainstorming on available materials. After three days in my workshop here's the result.

2016RodBox2

Constructed from metal roofing panels and aluminum angle over a 1/4" plywood substrate

2016RodBox3

Weighs about 50 pounds and removes in minutes by undoing four U bolts.

2016RodBox1

Holds 9 fully rigged rods up to 9'-6" long. Nicely cushioned cradles, watertight, ventilated and lockable. Even has enough room to accommodate my 8' one piece tarpon spinning rods.

Great used boat for sale: 22' Grady ready to fish

I know this boat, I actually guided for striped bass and sharks out of it for a few weeks when the Obsession was down for repairs. Worth every penny being asked. She's been kept at the Kennebec Tavern and Marina in Bath, Maine the last three years. Call the number below in area code (207) FMI.
